Vintage ephemera culture men's magazine GQ 1968 March
I
GQ (GENTLEMANS QUARTERLY), the leading American magazine of men's fashions and life-style, began in 1931 as a trade publication titled Apparel Arts which was aimed at wholesale buyers and retail sellers of men's clothing. Issues contained actual cloth samples attached to the pages. This led to the establishment of Esquire magazine in 1933. In 1958 Apparel Arts was reborn as a fashion supplement issued quarterly for Esquire subscribers and renamed GENTLEMEN'S QUARTERLY. In 1983 the magazine was acquired by Conde Nast, the title was simplified to GQ and more articles of general interest to men were added to appeal to a wider audience. Today, in the words of its publisher, GQ addresses "issues that shape men's personal expression, development and experiences."
